The University of New England Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is an advocacy chapter and not a collective bargaining unit. The organization does not anticipate changes to the current governance structures faculty/administrative interactions.
The Chapter emerged to elevate considerations of academic integrity and quality and to emphasize the faculty role in curriculum decision making.
Chapter meetings will provide faculty with a space to discuss issues without administrators present, to consider issues that may undermine our ability to best serve students, and to develop a consensus that is informed by national best practices and suitable consideration of local circumstances. At that time, members will bring ideas forward through the University Faculty Assembly, relevant College Assemblies, and other governance and adminisrative bodies.
The UNE Chapter supports the mission of the AAUP:
The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, post–doctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good. Founded in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country’s colleges and universities.
